Sorrento in spring is a wonderful thing: the days are warming, the flowers are in full bloom and the summer crowds have yet to settle in. With a range of charming performance venues in Sorrento itself and in the picturesque towns that line the Amalfi Coast, this is the perfect spring tour destination for choirs, as Decibellas Women’s Choir of Tarporley discovered on their choir tour this April.
‘A wonderful holiday which gave us the opportunity to get to better know so many choir members and to thoroughly enjoy singing in such fabulous surroundings.’
With five days spent exploring the delights of the region, from the beautiful towns of Amalfi, Atrani, Positano and Praiano to the historical sites of Montecassino Abbey and the excavations of Pompeii, choosing a tour highlight was unsurprisingly a difficult task. However, it was the performances themselves that stood out for Gill Stitt and one in particular that had a lasting impression:
‘Singing in the full church at Praiano with the local professional tenor and accompanied by a young, talented mandolin player was the best moment of the tour. We were made to feel so welcome and the concert was a huge success. Our rendition of the Neapolitan songs went down a treat and the concert finished with a standing ovation. We were even invited to come back!’
As well as their performance at Chiesa di San Gennaro, Decibellas also performed at Chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena in Atrani which was another huge success: ‘The evening concert in the beautiful Atrani church was attended by an extremely appreciative audience who enthusiastically joined in with our Italian repertoire.’ The concert highs continued with a final performance at Chiesa di Santa Marina Vergine in Pogerola: ‘The Church in Pogerola was beautiful with its colourful frescoes and our host made us feel very welcome, as did the audience.’
With a balanced itinerary that incorporated plenty of opportunity to visit the key points of interest along the coast, the group were particularly enamoured by Amalfi as they spent the day ‘visiting its nooks and crannies, drinking copious amounts of Italian coffee and popping in and out of the quaint shops’. Positano, with its colourful terracotta houses, quaint narrow streets and beautiful Spiaggia Grande pebbled beach, was also a big hit with the group, as Gill commented: ‘I think we all fell a little bit in love with Positano’.
The tour ended as all tours should end, with a celebratory evening meal: ‘We definitely finished our tour on a high and the meal afterwards was the icing on the cake. Delicious food and wonderful company. Who could ask for a better five days?! Thank you Rayburn Tours for making the tour run like clockwork.’
